Swarnamali Girls’ College Legacy
The “Maha Nagarika Pasala” was established in the village of Katukele in 1928, marking a significant milestone in the region's educational development. The school started with an enrollment of 164 students and was staffed by only 4 dedicated teachers, who faced the challenge of delivering quality education in a nascent institution.

In the same year, a pivotal decision was made to separate classes into primary and secondary levels. This restructuring was facilitated by two key figures, including Mr. Lithem, who served as the main inspector for the area at the time. Their efforts ensured that the educational framework was structured to meet the distinct needs of students at different stages of their learning journey.

To accommodate this new classification, the upper classes were situated in the boys' section of the school, while the primary section was designated to the girls' classrooms, reflecting the era's educational norms and practices.

The commitment to creating a conducive learning environment led to the construction of the first modern building in 1929, which provided a more standardized and functional space for both students and teachers. This development was a crucial step toward enhancing educational facilities in the region, setting the groundwork for future growth and improvement in Katukele’s educational landscape.

Curriculum Development & Sport Activities
The initiative was launched in 1928, aiming to enrich community engagement and promote cultural activities. By 1936, it had significantly broadened its scope, incorporating a diverse range of activities that catered to various interests and talents. These included theatrical performances that provided a platform for local artists, handicrafts that showcased traditional skills, folk dances that celebrated cultural heritage, and home science courses that emphasized practical life skills. Weaving also became an integral part of the initiative, helping preserve artisanal techniques.

In addition to these cultural pursuits, the initiative saw substantial progress in the realm of sports, creating opportunities for individuals to participate in physical activities and competitive events. A notable highlight emerged in 1941, when netball surged in popularity, further enriching the sporting landscape and encouraging more community involvement. In 1958, the school embarked on a groundbreaking initiative by organizing its very first ‘Shramadana’ campaign, which is a traditional community service program aimed at improving the school’s environment. This event, along with a vibrant concert and a captivating arts and crafts exhibition, was part of a larger effort under the initiative titled “Shramabimani.” The purpose of this initiative was not only to enhance the school’s facilities but also to promote creativity and teamwork among students and the community, fostering a spirit of collaboration and a sense of pride in their school.
